Whew! I just finished up a huge deadline for a yet-to-be-announced project and I feel that I am finally back to the land of the living. When large deadlines loom, I tend to hyper-focus on that one thing. Which means other things fall to the side…..you know, things like blogging, emailing, feeding my kids…..that kind of stuff! Anyways, today’s blog post is a little different! My good friend Mandy has a new class on Craftsy called Creative Longarm Quilting, with Mandy Leins. She has stopped by to let me interview her about it.
AW: Hi Mandy! Thanks for joining me, congrats on your new class! Can you tell me what your inspiration for the class was?
ML: When I first got my longarm, I was so worried that what I was doing was not right, or perfect, or good enough, and that kind of pressure (usually self-imposed) can be a real roadblock to enjoying your work. Why spend all that money on a machine, and then be too anxious to allow yourself use it?
This class is based on the time in my quilting career when I needed to free myself up from those worries and just have fun. I deliberately set out to break “the rules”. What are the rules and how can I work with them and around them to make something totally my own? In that way, making this class felt very much like modern improv piecing!
AW: How did you decide which projects to include in the class?
ML: I wanted new techniques I had never seen done before, and I wanted people to come away with a feeling that they could use them for fun AND for profit. The techniques are simple and quick, and have a lot of visual impact, and can also be used as add-ons to your business. I like knowing that I can do more with my machine, too.
I like to think these are great projects for stretching outside of the normal things we do all the time. They can be quick and fun, or as detailed as you want. There’s so much room for creativity and interpretation. It also allowed me to make new patterns and designs, which I also love to do.
AW: Even though this is your newest Craftsy class, it’s not your first class, right?
ML: That’s right, I also have a free class on craftsy,
A New Look at Longarm Quilting with Mandy Leins . It’s a relaxed approach to longarming and a lot of fun. Plus….did I mention it’s free??
Thanks so much to Mandy for stopping by. It seems that the last few blog posts I have written have had giveaways and this one is no different! Mandy has graciously supplied a free class for one lucky reader. Just leave a comment on this post and I will draw a lucky winner next week.
