Don’t you just love it when feathers just fly off of your machine? It doesn’t always work like that for me, but every once in a while, I find a zen-like moment where they just seem to flow from the machine.
I had a moment just like that when I was working on Lisa’s quilt. She had sent me an Amish style quilt with the request that I quilt feathers on it……..what a dream!!
When I started quilting it, I really didn’t have a plan. I figured that I would just go for it and see what happened. What ended up happening was a quilt that I couldn’t be prouder of!
The feathers ended up being a variety of shapes. In the large cornerstones of the quilt, I quilted a swirl-feather…
In one of the blue borders, I quilted a feather swag design…
Large triangle-shaped feathers work perfectly in large corners of the quilt.
Some bracket-shaped feathers. You know, just for fun!
But my absolute, all-time favorite part of the quilt was the center. It was just begging for some custom quilted feathers…..
I quilted a flower motif in the center of the square and some curvy feathers around the outside of the block. Then to really pull it all together, I quilted dense lines that radiated from the center. It certainly made the center of the quilt the focus.
Since I match the color of the bottom thread to the top thread, the quilting really contrasted on the back of the quilt. It looked just like a wholecloth quilt.
This quilt was so hard to give back, it made me smile just to look at it. I can’t wait until the feathers starting flying off my machine again!
And, I still owe a lucky winner a copy of Vintage Quilt Revival and that lucky winner is Julie M.
Julie send me an email with your address and I will get it sent to you!!
