Recently, I had the opportunity to quilt a gorgeous quilt for Michele and I thought it would be fun to show you a glimpse into the thread dilemma I had with this quilt….
Normally, it’s an easy choice to decide on a thread color….but not this time. I had it narrowed to two colors and just couldn’t decide…
Laying the thread out on top of the quilt didn’t make the decision any easier. They were both so close….
Finally, I did the professional, scientific thing…..I flipped a coin. Light gray won the toss and I got busy quilting…..but after quilting the first large feather, I wasn’t loving it. Go figure, my scientific coin toss didn’t work!
It’s not that it didn’t look good, it’s just that it was a little lighter than the fabric. Maybe the other thread color would have been better…
Hmmm…what to do? What to do? Since I don’t like to rip out quilting, I decided to stick with that thread color for the large feathers. But I switched to the second color for the rest of the quilting around the large feathers.
Even though it started out as a mistake, I was happy with how it turned out. The slightly different thread colors are not as obvious in the photos, but in person you can see a subtle difference. It really helps the large feathers make an impact.
And check out the center of the quilt, isn’t it fun and bright??
Have you ever made a quilting mistake that turned out better that expected?
