Today’s blog post is all about adding movement with quilting. I had the opportunity to quilt several Ballerina quilts for Julie (it’s one of her newest patterns!) and it’s a perfect example!
The one thing that stands out to me on this quilt, is that the blocks are “twirling”. I wanted the quilting to help reinforce that sense of movement on the quilt. For the first Ballerina quilt, I quilted a half feather in each part of the block. Having the feathers all point the same way helps emphasize the look of twirling.
Even though I loved the way it turned out, I tried something a little different in the next ballerina quilt (which I only have one picture of!) I quilted a plume feather in each portion of the block.
I had the each “stem” bend in the same direction.
I loved the plume feather so much that I used it in the next quilt as well. I normally like to use different designs each time I quilt the same quilt pattern. But, what can I say?? Sometimes I break my own rules!
Here is a close up of the quilting in the block:
If you are loving the plume feather, here is a little tutorial on how to quilt it. Of course, this quilting design is in my book as well…which should be out any day now…….
Happy Quilting!
